Hereford and Gloucester Canal Walks
A series of walks leaflets are available covering parts of the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal through the two counties.
There are now five walks available – all of which are proving very popular with both local people and visitors to the area. Each walk is illustrated with photos of points of interest and a clear map of the route.
The leaflets can be obtained from the Visitor Centre at The Wharf House or via the Contact Us page on this website. There is a cost of 30p per leaflet, which are supplied in a set of five. We will supply you with an address to which to send a self addressed and stamped envelope (standard first or second class stamp will suffice) with a further three second class stamps to cover the cost of the Walks Leaflets requested.
Canal Walk No 1 – Staplow
A circular walk of 2.5 miles, along part of the former Canal at Staplow, near Ledbury, Herefordshire. Researched and written by Nigel Jefferies.
Canal Walk No 2 – Withington Wharf
This circular walk of about 4 miles, follows part of the alignment of the canal and views the wharf where Stephen Ballard, who built the Canal between Ledbury and Hereford, constructed several buildings, that remain in near original condition. Researched and written by Nigel Jefferies.
Canal Walk No 3 – Dymock
This walk of about 5 miles, starts at Dymock, Gloucestershire, which is about four miles north of Newent, on the B4215. As with the first two leaflets, the Dymock walk has been researched and written by Nigel Jefferies.
Canal Walk No 4 – Llanthony Lock
A circular walk of about 3 miles across Alney Island from Over Basin to Llanthony Lock and on to Gloucester Docks. Researched and written by Maggie Jones and Belinda Sprigg.
Canal Walk No 5 – Oxenhall
This walk of about 4 miles starts at Oxenhall, near Newent, Gloucestershire, on the B4215. It explores a stretch of the canal approaching the southern portal of Oxenhall Tunnel including Ell brook Aqueduct, House Lock and Lock Cottage, built by Stephen Ballard. It also crosses the line of the former Gloucester to Ledbury Railway, built by the GWR after the closure of the canal and views the remains of the Newent coalfield. This walk has been researched and written by Nigel Jefferies.
