There are fantastic opportunities ahead of us requiring the acquisition of sections of the canal land. so we have a dedicated and long established LAND FUND. This fund is there to do ‘exactly as it says on the tin’ and provide the crucial funding to acquire the track of the Hereford and Gloucester Canal to permit restoration. To learn more please … Please download a leaflet. In addition to land aquisition, large sums of money continue to be needed. principally to enable canal construction and restoration works. Some recent purchases and received funds indicate the scale of numbers involved. The acquisition of The Malswick House pub and restaurant at Newent for £225,000+VAT was only made possible by two further anonymous donations by members: one of £10,000 and the other a short-term interest-free bridging loan of £60,000 pending HMRC’s eventual repayment of the VAT paid on the purchase price.   A grant of £20,000 to acquire a much-needed tractor and attachments was secured from the SW Regional Development Agency, Defra and the European Commission, as part of the Rural Development Programme for England. Short term priorities which require considerable funding include:–

  • Over Link Project – New for 2024, this project’s aim is to re-create a link between Over Basin and the River Severn by reconstructing the original river lock.
  • Malswick Project –following essential work and payment made for the land we now need the money to dig the canal.
  • Oxenhall No 2 lock is our next immediate project –  a modern day lock starts at £250,000 if all conditions are ideal. From there the canal channel needs to be reistated across the previyusly restored aqueduct towards the  Newent station site
  • Ledbury – once all conditions are met for the new development north of the viaduct we will need funds for building four locks and a new canal channel
  • Newent Station site – a major project recently redefined to include a boat lift
