The H&G Canal Trust                                                    You are here:  Restoration:  Yarkhill

The Yarkhill Project site starts ¼ mile to the west of the Hereford-Worcester road and stretches for about ¾ mile to the site of Barr's Lock, partly clothed in a beautiful avenue of trees. The restoration of this section was completed except for final "re-puddling" (to make it watertight) in 1996.

The Yarkhill Project illustrates what can be achieved by concentrating volunteer efforts in week or fortnight camps. Working in that way, you really get to see some progress on the ground.

The avenue of trees

As a measure of what can be achieved, Brian Fox noted some statistics in The Wharfinger in late 1993 about digging out the canal on the Yarkhill Project right through to Barr’s Lock:
Soil removed during the week 1600 cubic metres
Tree stumps taken out 70
Diesel fuel used 470 gallons
Volunteers 39 different faces
Voluntary hours 1100
Breakfasts cooked! 100
