The H&G Canal Trust                                                    You are here:  Restoration:  Monkhide

The Monkhide Project site is where restoration commenced in 1983 by the former Canal Society and was completed in 1995 by the Trust. The site is to the east of the A4103 Hereford-Worcester road and represents about 1 mile of restored canal ending at Middle Court Bridge.

The showpiece of the restoration here is Ballard's Skew Bridge, the most askew bridge on the entire inland waterway system. The bridge is a Grade II listed building and now displays a plaque unveiled by Stephen Ballard, grandson of its builder.

A beautiful stretch by Hospital Bridge

The first narrow boat to use the canal for 100 years was the Maria Ballard, named after Ballard's wife, and christened by grandson Stephen at the age of 92 in 1994.

Work in progress at the eastern end of Monkhide.
At present the canal ends here in a winding hole - a canal term for a turning space,
large enough for the Maria Ballard to turn

It is difficult to photograph Skew Bridge and accurately portray the skew.
The first of these pictures was taken before work started.
The others give an idea of the degree of skew.
