The H&G Canal Trust                                        You are here:  Restoration:  Newent/Oxenhall:  Ell Brook

The canal crossed the Ell Brook on a stone-built aquaduct. Our problem was that the stonework had become unsafe. Our solution was to erect a Bailey Bridge like the ones used by the military for temporary river crossings.

The bridge (technically, a 5-bay single-single) was erected in a week-end by Canal Trust volunteers with some advice from the Royal Engineers. We bought the £18,000 bridge for just 10% of its value and we even paid that in stage payments. We also own the 4-bay launch nose which means we could remove the bridge ourselves with only manual labour and use it elsewhere.
